Start with Service Desk — do not skip it
The biggest mistake non-IT graduates make is trying to jump straight into cloud or development roles. Service Desk is not beneath you. It is the door into every enterprise IT company in India and the world. Every experienced IT professional you admire either started here or wishes they did — because it gives you a firsthand understanding of how IT actually works inside a company.

Your degree does not matter — your skills do
We both graduated from Commerce backgrounds and today we work in IT at Microsoft and Entrata respectively. Nobody in IT has ever asked us about our graduation marks. What they asked about was our certifications, our experience with specific tools, and how we handle real IT problems. Shift your energy from worrying about your degree to building your skills — that is the only currency IT employers care about.

Get at least one Microsoft certification before applying
An MS-900 certification costs roughly ₹4,500, takes 4–6 weeks of preparation, and immediately separates your resume from every other non-IT graduate applying for the same Service Desk role. It signals to the hiring manager that you are serious, that you have taken initiative, and that you already know the product ecosystem you will be supporting. It is the single highest-return investment you can make before your first IT interview.

Build something before you apply — even one project
Every applicant has a certificate. Almost nobody has a project. When you walk into an interview and say “I built a mock helpdesk on Freshdesk and here are the screenshots on my LinkedIn” — that conversation changes completely. Hiring managers remember candidates who have done something tangible. It takes one weekend, costs nothing, and the impact on your interview outcome is real and significant.

English proficiency is non-negotiable
This is the one thing we cannot emphasise enough. Service Desk is a communication role. You will speak to users, managers, and sometimes international clients every single day. If your spoken English needs work, fix it now — before you apply, not after you join. Watch English content, speak English at home for 30 days, record yourself and listen back. Technical skills can be learned on the job. Poor communication kills careers before they begin.

Switch companies every 18 to 24 months in your early years
Your biggest salary jumps in IT will never come from annual increments. They come from switching companies. A company that gave you a 10% raise in March will offer the same role to a new joiner for 30% more in April. Use this to your advantage — gain your experience, get your certification, then move. A well-timed switch at 18 months can take you from ₹2.5 LPA to ₹4 LPA overnight. Loyalty is valuable later — not in your first three years.

I want to be completely honest with you about where I started. I am a Commerce graduate from Savitribai Phule Pune University. Not a BTech. Not a computer science degree. Just a B.Com and a deep, stubborn desire to be part of the IT world.

The early years were genuinely difficult. I visited every coaching institute I could find — online and offline. I enrolled in courses that promised careers and delivered nothing. I spoke to people who claimed to guide but only confused me further. Every time I thought I was moving forward, I found myself back at the beginning — frustrated, exhausted, and questioning whether this dream was even possible for someone like me.

What finally changed things was not a course or a mentor. It was a decision. I decided to stop waiting for someone to show me the way and start figuring it out myself — one YouTube video, one Udemy course, one concept at a time. It took years. It was not elegant or fast. But it worked.

The break came through a Service Desk role — the very role I had been dismissing as too basic, too entry-level. That role gave me everything I needed: real enterprise exposure, a foundation in ITIL and Microsoft tools, and the credibility to keep climbing. Step by step, certification by certification, I built my way into the Microsoft ecosystem.

My story begins with a simple piece of advice from a friend — and that one conversation changed the entire direction of my life. I had just started my career at Capita when I met Walid. He told me things about the IT industry that I had never heard before — about Microsoft tools, about career paths, about how people without technical degrees were building serious careers in IT. I was completely fascinated.

Eventually, all that effort crystallised into an offer from TCS as a Service Desk agent. I took that role with everything I had — not just doing the job, but studying alongside it, earning certifications, absorbing new technologies, and always looking at the next step. I treated every day at TCS as both a job and a classroom.

That dedication took me somewhere I never imagined when I first started — to Entrata, where I worked in Japan for eight months before returning to Pune. When I reflect on that journey, from a confused Commerce graduate with no idea where to start, to an IT professional who has worked internationally — the distance still surprises me.
